Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass play powerful, unadorned, and intense traditional bluegrass – no hybrid or genre-bending music here. It’s music borne of the vibrant old-time southern fiddle bands as well as the lonesome moans of the backwoods mountain blues. The instruments blaze with energy while the songs reveal a paradoxical, desperate sadness anchoring the music squarely in the classic bluegrass tradition. Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass combine those forces with a drive and energy that takes over your senses. It’s music you not only hear but also feel in your gut. Opening act will be the Sleepy Hollow String Band, from Westchester County, N.Y., an acoustic bluegrass band covering a wide range of American traditional roots music. Its influences range from Flatt and Scruggs and Ricky Skaggs to Johnny Cash, George Jones, Leadbelly, and Woody Guthrie. Connie McCardle, lead singer and guitarist, is a haute couture dress designer by day and by night brings an honest and authentic southern vibe to the blues-inflected tunes she sings. Cousin Bob Bernstein’s mandolin chop is always where it needs to be, at the edge of the beat and driving the band. While he is a school psychologist by day, he swings the band with his saucy lead playing. Ben Freed, on banjo, is the band’s unofficial but never reluctant leader and also the band’s optometrist. You may have heard his banjo playing on the soundtrack of The Simpsons TV show or the film Raising Arizona. Rick Brodsky, also a psychologist, contributes the band’s rhythmic foundation on upright bass with his rock-solid sense of timing.
