As Ron Thomason retires from the road, we celebrate his extraordinary career and thank him for the joy, friendship, and music he has shared with us all for all these years.
Ron is a true renaissance man — bluegrass singer, songwriter, storyteller, mandolin and guitar player, championship horseman, historian, humorist, festival creator, and lifelong student of Appalachian culture. Since founding Dry Branch Fire Squad in 1976, he has delighted audiences with top-shelf musicianship, sharp wit, poignant storytelling, and a deep respect for the traditions that shaped his life.
Grey Fox has been honored to call Dry Branch Fire Squad its host band since 1985, when founder Mary Doub extended the invitation. For more than four decades, Ron’s music, laughter, and unmistakable persona have helped define the fabric of this festival and create lasting memories for generations of Grey Fox attendees.
Told ya that to tell you this — Ron, you’ll always be part of the Grey Fox Family.
